Do you limit your life because you have a fear or phobia?
There are many different fears and phobias all creating problems for people in their everyday lives. I’ve successfully worked with all sorts of problems including fear of flying, birds, dogs, spiders, snakes, dentists, needles, blood, vomiting, and some more unusual things like buttons and balloons. The list is endless and sometimes people aren’t even aware how a phobia has developed. Phobias are surprisingly common and 1 in 10 people have such an irrational fear.
Some of the most common include:
arachnophobia – fear of spiders
claustrophobia – fear of confined spaces
agoraphobia – fear of open spaces and public places
social phobia – fear of social situations
To others, these fears, phobias, feelings of anxiety or even panic attacks can seem silly but to the sufferer, they are very real. I have fast and effective tools for helping you free yourself from feelings of fear and panic. Together we can change the negative response you have learned into a positive, managed response.
It is difficult to change without expert help
Every holiday season, as travel dates are looming, people contact me about their fears. It may be a fear of wasps or heights that they might encounter, but typically it’s about flying, fear of the enclosed space on the plane, or feeling unsafe.
“We have booked a holiday abroad but as the date is getting closer I am terrified of flying. I know it’s irrational but I can’t help it. The problem is I haven’t told my partner how bad I feel so I really need to get this sorted”
Your mind may automatically give a warning that getting on a plane might be dangerous by releasing hormones which make you feel uneasy, anxious and scared. It’s your signal to be careful or to remove yourself from the situation so you stay safe. This response is natural and has evolved to protect you, but it happens very quickly and automatically in a part of your brain that you have no conscious control over. This is why it is so difficult to change without expert help. If you had no anxiety about anything, you’d end up in some very dangerous places!
When you have a phobia this mechanism has become over-sensitive. It’s still aiming to keep you safe, but it can make you anxious even if the risk is very low; sometimes when there is no risk at all. You can think of this part of your mind as a kind of ‘personal security guard’. An efficient guard who checks ID and allows people into a building only if they have genuine business there increases safety and security. An over-zealous guard who locks all the doors and windows, and won’t let anyone in at all would certainly keep the building safe and secure, but they would also prevent anyone from using it. This is what your mind is doing when you have a phobia; keeping you so far away from what it fears, that it stops being useful and starts being difficult to live with.
Phobias can be treated extremely quickly and effectively
“I had a few sessions with you a while back for my fear of flying. I just wanted to say that my flight to Miami went amazing. I had a fantastic holiday so thank you so much for making it happen! I’m currently at the airport feeling absolutely fine, so it worked! Thank you so much”
Using BWRT®, fears and phobias can be treated extremely quickly and effectively. I focus on the solution, working in the ‘here and now’. There is no traditional exposure or desensitisation work, so you don’t need to worry about facing your fears head-on. You are encouraged to harness the natural way your brain learns to help you. You will find that unwanted reactions are no longer triggered. Instead, you are able to feel and behave the way you really want, making situations easier for you and those who share your life!
“In a short space of time, Susan helped transform my 11-year-old daughter back to her normal confident outgoing self. She started to suffer from a phobia which then encroached onto her everyday life resulting in severe anxiety. After just 2 sessions she is free of all her symptoms and is going from strength to strength. It is so nice to see after a difficult few years. I cannot recommend enough. Thank you”
Imagine what you can achieve
There really is no need to let fear, a phobia, or worries about having a panic attack, prevent you from enjoying all that life has to offer. Just imagine what you can achieve without those old, outdated beliefs holding you back!
“Just to let you know that I made it up the Whistlers Mountain tramway here in Jasper today! I was a little anxious at first but managed it all with no problem, I am so pleased with myself! Thank you so much for all your help”
